Review – Saving Private Ryan

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

While I think that everyone would agree that this is an excellent movie, I think we can also agree that it is not an easy, sit back and relax type of movie. It is extremely intense beginning about three minutes into the movie when you follow Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) and his men who are landing on Omaha Beach. Steven Spielberg pulled no punches when filming this scene and any thoughts you may have about the nobility of war are quickly dispelled. What you see is a scene of horror filled with young terrified men, who know they may well be facing their last minutes of life. They’re not thinking about winning, or the honor of their country, or taking out the enemy, their thinking about how they will survive. The Omaha Beach scene, which is very long, is stressful to watch and its realism leaves you shaken. But as there is no rest for the weary so this is true for Miller, his men and us, the watchers. They are assigned a special mission to find and save Private Ryan, the last remaining son of four brothers sent overseas. Captain Miller and his men question the logic and sanity of risking the lives of so many men to save the life of one. If you have not seen this movie, I will not give away the ending which is, like the rest of the movie a little too realistic for comfort. Sorry, no fairy tale endings here. No matter how disturbing this movie is, it is well worth the emotional effort it requires to watch it, as it is a superbly told story, with amazing effects and top quality performances by Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns and the rest of the cast. I highly recommend this as a must see movie.
